Full poem reads:
libraries exist
for the libraries and librarians of this world, thank you
libraries exist, i repeat like a prayer between lips
when the world feels too brutal to bear;
they didn't always exist, libraries,
these spaces of open-armed refuge, until one day
perhaps in the heat of a summer
or whilst trudging through snow, somewhere,
someone, seeing children or adults
desperate for stories and warmth,
and the idea was born, and it spread, spread
like hugs amongst sorrow, like laughter,
like seedlings sprout colour between rubble,
until country upon country, town upon village
in a building, or a bus, or a phone booth abandoned,
books, lined up like offerings for no reason other than love;
libraries exist, i repeat to myself,
when the news brings us nothing but profit and heartache,
when faith in humanity seems a distant horizon;
once upon a time, there were none in the world, no libraries,
until somewhere in the struggle between hardship and hope,
the idea was born, shelves stacked
full of stories and knowledge, doors open to all
so that right now a child is choosing a book to take home
believing they are worth every word
